Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the influence of Total Quality Management (TQM) characteristics on the employee engagement in the Egyptian oil industry. This research focuses primarily on the impacts of senior management commitment, employee training, engagement, empowerment, continuous improvement, and incentives and recognition on their job involvement.
Design/methodology/ approach: The effect of Total Quality Management aspects on employee engagement in the Egyptian oil industry was investigated using a quantitative cross-sectional research approach. Data was gathered using a standardized questionnaire administered to workers in the industry. The primary analysis included 420 valid replies. The research studied the six pillars of Total Quality Management (TQM) as predictors for employee engagement including top management commitment, staff training, employee engagement, employee empowerment, continuous improvement and reward and recognition. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS program.
Findings: The findings suggest that all the components of Total Quality Management are positively correlated with the engagement of employees at work . Employee training has been shown to be the best predictor of employee engagement, followed by continuous improvement and senior management commitment.
Originality/ value: This research contributes to the literature of total quality management and employee engagement by presenting empirical findings from the Egyptian petroleum industry, a setting that has not been given much consideration in the academic literature.
