Abstract

This paper examined the improvisation of instructional materials for teaching social studies in junior secondary schools. The study considered social studies a core subject in the school curriculum taught from primary to junior secondary school level purported for citizenship education. Effective teaching and learning of social studies relies more on the utilization of instructional materials to make content vivid and interesting. However, literature highlighted inadequacy and non-utilization of instructional materials in teaching the subject, thus suggesting improvisation. This paper explored the concept of improvisation and benefits of improvisation in teaching and learning. Instructional materials improvised in the teaching of social studies were identified, and lastly problems hindering teachers of social studies from improvising instructional materials were discussed.
